Overview
Hydrogen bromide ( CAS 10035-10-6 ), commercially supplied as hydrobromic acid in aqueous solution, is an inorganic acid used across pharmaceutical synthesis, food processing, and water treatment.
HBr delivers strong acidification and bromide ion activity that drive its utility across multiple industrial sectors. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, hydrobromic acid is used to produce active pharmaceutical ingredient salts.
Hydrobromide salts improve the stability and solubility profile of amine-based drug compounds, making them suitable for solid dosage formulation. Water treatment operations use HBr as a bromination precursor.
It reacts with oxidants to generate hypobromous acid for microbiological control in cooling towers and process water systems. In food-grade applications, it functions as a pH-regulating agent in controlled processing environments.
Catalyst systems in organic synthesis also rely on HBr as a brominating agent for producing intermediates used in agrochemicals and specialty chemicals. Hydrobromic acid is supplied as an aqueous solution.
The 48% concentration is the most commercially standard grade. Both technical and reagent-grade specifications are available, with pharmaceutical-grade material produced to USP and Ph. Eur. standards.
These quality benchmarks ensure suitability for API salt formation. Packaging ranges from drums and IBCs to bulk tanker supply depending on the specific volume requirements of the industrial facility.
