Silicon dioxide

CAS: 112945-52-5

Overview

Silicon dioxide ( CAS 112945-52-5 ), commercially known as synthetic amorphous silica or fumed silica, is a high-purity, engineered form of silica produced through vapor-phase hydrolysis.

Unlike crystalline or precipitated grades, this material is manufactured specifically to deliver controlled rheology modification, anti-settling, and foam suppression across demanding industrial formulations.

In coatings and adhesives, it functions as a thixotropic agent, preventing sagging in applied films and controlling flow in sealants and structural adhesives for industrial use.

Personal care formulators incorporate it to adjust texture, improve powder flowability, and stabilize emulsions in products such as sunscreens and pressed cosmetics for consumers.

Lubricant manufacturers use it as a thickener in grease formulations and as a reinforcing filler where thermal stability under load is required for heavy machinery applications.

In plastics and polymer processing, it acts as an anti-blocking agent in film extrusion and supports stabilization of pigment dispersions in masterbatches during the manufacturing process.

Synthetic amorphous silica is supplied as a low-bulk-density white powder, with hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface-treated variants available to suit aqueous or solvent-based systems.

Standard grades include food-grade ( FCC compliant) and technical grades, with surface area specifications typically used to differentiate reinforcing versus flow-aid applications.
