Overview
Cetyl ethylhexanoate (CAS 59130-69-7 ), also sold as hexadecyl 2-ethylhexanoate, is a synthetic ester of cetyl alcohol and 2-ethylhexanoic acid used across personal care and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
It functions as an emollient, skin-conditioning agent, and carrier solvent, delivering a lightweight, non-greasy feel in finished formulations. In skincare and color cosmetics, it acts as an emollient base.
It serves as a spreading agent in creams, lotions, foundations, and lip products, improving texture and skin adhesion. Sun care formulators use it as a solvent carrier for UV filters.
This enhances their dispersion and photostability within the formula. In hair care, it contributes to conditioning treatments and serums where a silicone-free, lightweight oil phase is required.
Pharmaceutical topical formulations rely on it as a plasticizing carrier in ointments and transdermal delivery systems. It is supplied as a clear, pale liquid suitable for direct incorporation.
It is available in cosmetic-grade and pharmaceutical-grade specifications, with the latter meeting requirements aligned with Ph. Eur. and USP standards for synthetic esters.
These standards ensure suitability for topical applications. Bulk supply is standard in drums and IBCs, with smaller packaging available for R&D and formulation development.
