Overview
Ethyl methyl carbonate ( CAS 623-53-0 ), commonly abbreviated as EMC, is a linear organic carbonate ester used as a high-purity solvent and electrolyte component across battery and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Its low viscosity and broad solvency profile make it a preferred carrier in formulations requiring controlled evaporation and chemical compatibility. EMC is a primary electrolyte solvent in lithium-ion battery manufacturing.
In this application, it is blended with other carbonates to optimize ionic conductivity and cycle performance. In pharmaceutical synthesis, it functions as a reaction solvent and intermediate for active ingredient processing.
This is particularly useful where low toxicity and clean evaporation profiles are required. Industrial and specialty cleaning formulations use EMC as a carrier solvent to dissolve resins, coatings, and adhesive residues.
It performs these tasks without aggressive substrate attack. It also appears in flavor and fragrance compounding as a solvent carrier for sensitive aroma compounds requiring controlled release during application.
Ethyl methyl carbonate is supplied as a clear liquid in drum, IBC, and bulk quantities. Battery-grade and high-purity electronic grades are the most commercially prominent specifications for industrial use.
These grades feature defined water content and metal ion limits critical for electrolyte applications. Pharmaceutical-grade material is available from select suppliers where process purity documentation is required.
