Overview
Bismuth tris(2-ethylhexanoate) (CAS 67874-71-9 ), also supplied under trade designations such as Pucat 25, Neostann U 600, and KK 348, is an organo-bismuth compound used as a metal catalyst.
It functions as a non-tin, non-mercury alternative for accelerating reactions in polyurethane and polymer formulations. In polyurethane systems, it catalyzes the isocyanate-polyol reaction effectively.
This makes it a drop-in replacement for organotin catalysts in foam, elastomer, and coating formulations where regulatory pressure limits tin use. Sealant and adhesive manufacturers use it to control cure speed.
It is ideal for managing open time in one- and two-component systems. In industrial coatings, it promotes cross-linking in moisture-cure and two-pack urethane topcoats applied to metal and wood substrates.
Lubricant formulators also employ it as a precursor for bismuth-based extreme-pressure additive packages. Bismuth tris(2-ethylhexanoate) is supplied as a viscous liquid, typically in solution with organic solvents.
