Disulfur dichloride

CAS: 10025-67-9

Overview

Disulfur dichloride (CAS 10025-67-9 ), also known as Sulphur Monochloride or S2Cl2, is a reactive sulfur chloride compound used industrially as a cross-linking agent and chemical intermediate.

It functions primarily as a vulcanizing agent in rubber processing and as a precursor in synthesis and catalytic applications. In rubber and tire manufacturing, S2Cl2 cold-vulcanizes natural and synthetic rubber.

This process occurs at low temperatures, enabling processing of heat-sensitive articles such as thin-walled goods and surgical items. In agrochemical production, it serves as an intermediate in synthesizing sulfur-containing pesticides.

It is also used for crop protection compounds. Mining and metallurgical operations use it in the extraction and refining of certain metals, particularly in chlorination-based processes for recovering platinum group metals.

It also functions as a reagent and catalyst precursor in organic synthesis, facilitating the introduction of sulfur and chlorine functionalities into target molecules. This makes it a versatile tool for chemical plants.

Disulfur dichloride is supplied as an amber to yellow fuming liquid, typically in drum or IBC packaging suited to its highly reactive nature. It is available in technical grade for various industrial uses.

Purity specifications commonly range from 95% to 98% depending on the intended application. Buyers should confirm stabilizer content and moisture levels, as these affect reactivity and shelf life in downstream processes.
