Overview
Hydrotalcite (CAS 11097-59-9 ), also known as magnesium aluminum hydroxycarbonate, is a synthetic layered double hydroxide mineral used across industrial and pharmaceutical applications.
Its layered structure gives it strong anion-exchange and buffering capacity, making it effective as an acid scavenger, stabilizer, and sequestrant in demanding processing environments.
In PVC and polyolefin compounding, it functions as an acid scavenger and thermal stabilizer, neutralizing chloride byproducts that would otherwise degrade the polymer or corrode equipment.
Rubber formulators incorporate it to improve heat stability and extend service life in high-temperature vulcanization processes. In water treatment, it sequesters heavy metal ions and phosphates.
This process supports effluent compliance in industrial discharge applications through anion exchange. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as an antacid active ingredient in solid oral dosage forms.
Its controlled buffering profile is a key formulation parameter for these medical applications. The material is supplied as a fine white powder in both synthetic and naturally derived forms.
Standard grades include pharmaceutical-grade material meeting USP and Ph. Eur. specifications, as well as technical-grade material for polymer and industrial applications.
