Talc

CAS: 14807-96-6

Overview

Talc (CAS 14807-96-6 ), also known by its food additive designation E553b and commercially as Steritalc, is a naturally occurring hydrated magnesium silicate mined and processed for industrial use.

It functions primarily as a filler, lubricant, anti-caking agent, and surface modifier in solid and semi-solid formulations across multiple sectors. In pharmaceuticals, it acts as a glidant and lubricant.

This material improves powder flow and prevents die sticking during tablet compression. Personal care and cosmetics formulators incorporate it into pressed powders and foundations to control texture and absorb moisture.

It is also used to improve slip in body powders. Plastics processors use it as a mineral filler to increase stiffness, reduce cycle times, and lower raw material costs in polypropylene compounds.

In food production, it is approved as an anti-caking agent for coating chewing gum, rice, and dried goods. This prevents clumping during storage and handling while maintaining product integrity.

The product is supplied as a fine white powder in a range of particle sizes and surface treatments. Established grades include food-grade ( FCC ), USP , Ph. Eur. , and technical grades.

Cosmetic-grade material is also widely available for specialized manufacturing needs. Packaging options typically range from multi-wall paper bags to bulk quantities for large-scale industrial supply.
