Overview
Vinylsulfonic acid (CAS 1184-84-5 ), also known as Ethylenesulfonic acid, is a reactive sulfonic acid monomer used to introduce permanent anionic functionality into polymer chains. It enables formulators and polymer chemists to engineer surface charge and ionic character.
This monomer allows for the direct integration of hydrophilicity into copolymer structures. In textile and leather processing, it is copolymerized into finishing agents that improve dye uptake and substrate wettability without washing out over time.
Water treatment polymers incorporate this acid to produce scale inhibitors and dispersants that perform across a broad pH range. Paper manufacturers use it in surface sizing and retention aid formulations where controlled charge density is critical.
The chemical is essential for sheet formation and coating adhesion in the paper industry. In specialty plastics, it functions as a comonomer in ion-exchange resins and antistatic coatings where permanent sulfonate groups are required.
Vinylsulfonic acid is typically supplied as an aqueous solution, with 25% and 50% concentrations being the most commercially standard. Technical grade is the primary market offering, suitable for industrial polymerization and formulation use.
The product is handled according to rigorous industrial safety protocols to ensure stability. Packaging ranges from drums to IBC totes depending on volume requirements, providing flexibility for various manufacturing scales and logistics needs.
