Dimethylacetamide

CAS: 127-19-5

Overview

Dimethylacetamide ( CAS 127-19-5 ), commonly known as DMAc or DMAC, is a high-boiling polar aprotic solvent used across pharmaceutical manufacturing, fiber production, and specialty chemical processing.

Its strong solvating power makes it the preferred choice for dissolving polymers, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and resins that resist conventional solvents. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, DMAc is used as a reaction solvent.

It serves as a crystallization medium for APIs, particularly in the synthesis of antibiotics and oncology compounds where solubility and process consistency are critical. Fiber and membrane producers rely on it to dissolve polyacrylonitrile.

It is also used for aramid polymers for wet-spinning processes, including the production of carbon fiber precursors and filtration membranes. It functions as a process solvent in the manufacture of polyurethane films and coatings.

This enables uniform dispersion of high-molecular-weight resins. In agrochemical and specialty chemical synthesis, DMAc supports reactions requiring a stable, high-boiling medium that remains inert under demanding conditions.

DMAc is supplied as a clear liquid in drums, IBCs, and bulk tanker quantities. Standard commercial grades include technical grade and pharmaceutical-grade specifications for industrial use.

The material is compliant with various regulatory standards and is often categorized as an ICH Q3C Class 2 solvent. Moisture content and purity levels are typically specified to meet the requirements of regulated environments.

These specifications ensure the product meets the necessary criteria for high-stakes manufacturing. Quality control measures are strictly followed to maintain the integrity of the solvent during transport and storage.
