Lead monoxide (CAS 1317-36-8 ), commonly known as litharge or massicot depending on its crystalline form, is an inorganic lead compound used as a reactive oxide in industrial processing. It functions primarily as a catalyst, curing agent, and flux across rubber manufacturing and metallurgical applications.

In rubber and tire production, lead monoxide acts as a vulcanization activator and accelerator co-agent, improving cross-link density and heat resistance in specialty compounds. Metallurgical processors use it as a flux in lead refining and smelting operations.

In these smelting operations, it facilitates the separation of impurities from base metal melts. It also serves as a precursor in the production of lead-based glass formulations, contributing to refractive index and density in optical and crystal glass manufacturing.

In mining and metals processing, it functions as an intermediate in the recovery and refining of lead from ore concentrates. Lead monoxide is supplied as a fine powder or dense granules, with particle size and purity specifications varying by end-use requirement.

Standard commercial grades include technical and industrial purity levels, typically at 99% minimum lead oxide content. Both litharge (alpha-PbO) and massicot (beta-PbO) polymorphic forms are available, with litharge being the predominant commercial form.
