Tocopherols

CAS: 1406-66-2

Overview

Tocopherols (CAS 1406-66-2 ), also sold under E306 , are a family of naturally derived fat-soluble antioxidants extracted primarily from vegetable oils. In commercial formulations, they function as oxidative stabilizers.

These compounds protect lipid-containing products from rancidity, color degradation, and shelf-life reduction. In food manufacturing, they are used to extend the shelf life of edible oils, fats, margarines, and fat-based spreads.

By retarding lipid oxidation, they ensure product quality over time. Pharmaceutical manufacturers incorporate these antioxidants into oil-based drug formulations, softgel capsules, and nutritional supplements where stability is critical.

In animal feed production, they protect fat-soluble nutrients and feed fats from oxidation during storage and pelleting. Personal care formulators rely on them in emollient-rich creams, serums, and hair oils.

They serve both as an antioxidant preservative system and as a moisturizing active in cosmetic applications. These products are supplied as viscous oils or oil-based liquid concentrates with varying concentrations.

Mixed tocopherol concentrations typically range from 50% to 97% depending on the specific application. Food-grade and feed-grade specifications are standard across the market for industrial use.

Food applications are covered under the specific regulatory designation. USP and Ph.Eur. grades are available for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical use cases requiring documented purity and compliance.
