Overview
Potassium sorbate (CAS 24634-61-5 ), also known as E202 , is a broad-spectrum preservative used across food, beverage, and personal care manufacturing. It inhibits the growth of mold, yeast, and fungi, extending shelf life in a wide range of finished products.
In food and beverage production, it preserves baked goods, dairy products, wines, and soft drinks. It is typically used at low concentrations to meet regulatory limits without affecting the final taste or color of the product.
Personal care and cosmetic formulators rely on it to protect water-containing products such as lotions, shampoos, and wet wipes from microbial contamination. It is also used in food packaging coatings and surface treatments.
For cheese and dried fruit, direct application controls spoilage at the product surface. In combination with other preservatives, it provides broader antimicrobial coverage in complex formulations where a single-agent approach is insufficient.
This material is supplied as a white granular powder or fine powder, with granule grades preferred in food manufacturing for improved flow and dust reduction. These physical properties ensure efficient handling in large-scale production.
Standard grades include FCC , USP , and food-grade specifications, with the former being the most common reference for food and beverage procurement. Purity is typically 99% or higher for industrial applications.
The material is available in bulk bags and fiber drums suited to industrial-scale use. This ensures that manufacturers can maintain consistent supply chains for high-volume production requirements across various sectors.
