Overview
Melamine phosphate (CAS 41583-09-9 ) is a halogen-free flame retardant salt produced from the reaction of melamine and phosphoric acid. It functions by releasing non-combustible gases and forming a protective char layer when exposed to heat.
This mechanism interrupts combustion in polymer systems and coatings. In intumescent coatings and paints, it acts as the acid source component, enabling the char-forming reaction that protects structural steel and wood substrates.
Building and construction applications rely on this protection for safety. Plastics processors incorporate it into polyolefins, polyamides, and epoxy systems to meet UL 94 and other flame retardancy standards required in components.
These standards are essential for automotive and electronics manufacturing. Textile and paper manufacturers apply it in back-coating formulations to achieve flame retardancy certification for upholstery and curtains.
It is also used for industrial fabrics and in rigid and flexible foam systems. These systems are common in aerospace and defense applications where halogen-free compliance is a strict procurement requirement.
The product is supplied as a white powder in various particle size distributions to suit compounding and coating processes. Technical grade is the standard commercial form for most industrial uses.
Purity levels are typically specified at 98% or above to ensure performance. Packaging is available in 25 kg bags, with bulk options available for high-volume industrial buyers requiring large quantities.
