Dicyandiamide

Dicyandiamide (CAS 461-58-5 ), commonly abbreviated as DICY and also known as cyanoguanidine, is a crystalline solid used as a latent curing agent and cross-linking compound across multiple industrial sectors.

Its low reactivity at ambient temperatures makes it practical for formulating one-component systems with extended shelf life. In epoxy resin systems, DICY functions as a latent hardener for structural adhesives.

It is also utilized in powder coatings and printed circuit board laminates, activating only at elevated cure temperatures. Textile and paper processors use it to produce crease-resistant and wet-strength treatments.

In these applications, it reacts with other finishing agents to build durable cross-linked networks on fiber substrates. In leather processing, it acts as a retanning auxiliary that improves fiber structure and fullness.

Flame-retardant formulations for plastics and coatings also incorporate DICY as a reactive nitrogen-containing component. This specific chemical property contributes to char formation during combustion processes.

Dicyandiamide is supplied as a white crystalline powder in a range of particle sizes. Fine-milled grades are available for epoxy applications requiring uniform dispersion and high performance.

Standard commercial grades include technical and industrial specifications for various uses. Purified grades meeting defined melting point and assay thresholds are available for electronics and specialty coatings.
