Abietic acid

CAS: 514-10-3

Overview

Abietic acid (CAS 514-10-3 ), also known commercially as Sylvic acid, is the primary resin acid derived from pine rosin and serves as a foundational raw material across adhesive, coating, and surface treatment applications.

It functions as a tackifier, emulsifier, and film-forming agent, giving formulators a bio-based building block with strong substrate adhesion characteristics. In adhesives and sealants, it is used to build tack and cohesive strength.

Pressure-sensitive and hot-melt formulations benefit from its inclusion. Printing ink manufacturers rely on it as a resin component that controls viscosity, pigment dispersion, and ink adhesion to paper and packaging substrates.

In surface coatings, it contributes to film formation and acts as a wetting agent that improves substrate coverage in alkyd and varnish systems. Personal care formulators incorporate it into cosmetic bases for texture modification.

This material is supplied as an off-white to pale yellow powder or crystalline solid. It is available in technical grade, which covers the majority of industrial adhesive, ink, and coating applications.

Rosin-derived grades vary in purity and acid value, and buyers should confirm specification sheets against their formulation requirements. This ensures the material meets the necessary performance standards for the end product.
