Overview
Cocamidopropyl betaine (CAS 61789-40-0 ), commonly sourced under the abbreviation CAPB, is an amphoteric surfactant derived from coconut oil used across personal care and industrial cleaning formulations.
It builds and stabilizes foam, conditions surfaces, and reduces the irritation potential of harsher co-surfactants in the same system. In shampoos, body washes, and facial cleansers, it acts as a secondary surfactant.
This material boosts foam density while moderating the aggressiveness of primary anionic surfactants like SLES. Liquid hand soaps and household cleaners rely on it to maintain viscosity and cleaning performance across a wide pH range.
Textile and fiber processing operations use it as a softening and antistatic agent during wet processing stages. In industrial and institutional cleaning concentrates, it contributes degreasing performance and emulsification of oils.
The surfactant provides these benefits without destabilizing the overall formulation. Cocamidopropyl betaine is supplied as an aqueous solution, with 30% and 35% active matter concentrations being the most common commercial forms.
