Benzotriazole BT

CAS: 70321-86-7

Overview

Benzotriazole BT (CAS 70321-86-7 ) is a high-performance UV absorber used to protect polymer systems and coatings from photodegradation. Commercially recognized under the trade name Tinuvin 234, it intercepts UV radiation before it can initiate chain scission.

This chemical prevents color shift in finished materials and is essential for maintaining structural integrity. In industrial and automotive coatings, it prevents yellowing and gloss loss in clear coats and pigmented topcoats.

These coatings are often exposed to prolonged outdoor weathering and require robust protection. Plastics processors incorporate it into polycarbonate, PET, and engineering thermoplastics where long-term transparency is critical.

Mechanical retention is also a key benefit for these materials during their lifecycle. Adhesive and sealant formulators use it to extend service life in construction and transportation assemblies subject to UV exposure.

Printing and packaging applications rely on it to protect UV-curable inks and laminate films from fading. This is particularly important during outdoor display or storage where light exposure is constant and intense.

Benzotriazole BT is supplied as a white to off-white powder for easy handling. It is available in technical grade for industrial polymer and coatings applications, with purity specifications typically at 98% or higher.

Packaging options generally range from kilogram-scale bags to bulk quantities suited for large-volume compounding operations. This ensures flexibility for both small-scale testing and full industrial production requirements.
