Overview
Benzotriazole (CAS 95-14-7 ), commonly abbreviated as BTA, is an organic heterocyclic compound used across industrial sectors primarily as a corrosion inhibitor and metal deactivator.
It forms stable complexes on copper and copper alloy surfaces, protecting them from oxidative degradation in both aqueous and non-aqueous systems. In lubricants and metalworking fluids, BTA is incorporated as a copper passivator.
This prevents metal-catalyzed oil degradation and staining of non-ferrous components. Water treatment formulations rely on it to protect copper pipework and heat exchanger surfaces in recirculating cooling systems.
Automotive antifreeze and engine coolant products use BTA to inhibit corrosion on brass and copper engine components throughout the coolant circuit. This ensures long-term stability for automotive systems.
In electronics manufacturing, it is applied as a surface treatment to prevent tarnishing of copper contacts and printed circuit board traces during storage and processing. This maintains high conductivity and reliability.
Benzotriazole is supplied as an off-white to pale yellow crystalline powder or as flakes. Standard commercial grades include technical grade and high-purity grades suited to electronics and precision metalworking.
Bulk supply is available in bags or fiber drums, with solution concentrates also offered for direct dosing in water treatment and coolant blending operations. These formats ensure ease of handling for industrial users.
