Carbon tetrafluoride (CAS 75-73-0 ), also supplied under the designations PFC-14 and Freon 14, is a fluorinated gas used primarily as a plasma etching and cleaning agent in semiconductor and electronics manufacturing.

Its chemical stability under extreme conditions makes it a process gas of choice where precision and consistency are non-negotiable. In semiconductor fabrication, it functions as a plasma etch gas for silicon dioxide and silicon nitride layers.

This gas enables precise patterning in integrated circuit production. Electronics manufacturers also use it for chamber cleaning in CVD equipment, removing deposited residues without damaging sensitive components.

In aerospace and defense applications, it serves as a reference gas and dielectric medium in specialized testing and calibration environments. Cryogenic and atmospheric research programs source it as a tracer gas.

This is due to its long atmospheric residence time and measurable background concentration. The product is supplied as a compressed gas in high-pressure cylinders and tube trailers, with purity grades ranging from industrial to high-purity.
