Overview
Ferrous sulfate (CAS 7720-78-7 ) is an inorganic iron salt supplied as a heptahydrate or anhydrous form, used across water treatment, agriculture, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
It functions primarily as an iron source, reducing agent, and precipitating agent in industrial processes. In municipal water treatment, it acts as a coagulant and phosphate precipitant.
This chemical helps remove impurities and control algae in reservoirs. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as the active iron source in oral iron-deficiency supplements and fortified food products.
In agriculture, it corrects iron chlorosis in soils and turf, and serves as a moss control agent in lawn care formulations. Mining operations apply it in hydrometallurgical processes.
Applications include the precipitation of metals from leach solutions and as a reducing agent in chromate treatment of effluent. It is available as a heptahydrate in granular or crystalline form.
The product is also offered as a dried or anhydrous powder with lower water content for applications requiring reduced moisture. Recognized grades include USP , BP , and food-grade ( FCC ).
These standards ensure suitability for pharmaceutical and nutritional use, alongside technical and agricultural grades for industrial supply. Bulk availability supports high-volume procurement.
Packaging options include bags, supersacks, and bulk tanker quantities. This ensures reliable distribution across all major end-use sectors for global manufacturing and processing needs.
