Overview

Vinylpyrrolidone ( CAS 88-12-0 ), commonly abbreviated as NVP, is a reactive monomer used as a building block in polymer synthesis and UV-curable resin systems. It functions primarily as a reactive diluent and co-monomer.

This chemical enables formulators to tune viscosity, crosslink density, and adhesion in finished polymer networks. In UV-curable printing inks and coatings, NVP acts as a reactive diluent that reduces viscosity without adding inert solvent.

This process improves cure speed and film adhesion to difficult substrates. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as a precursor in the production of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), a binder and film-former found in tablets.

It is also utilized in topical formulations and controlled-release systems. Personal care formulators incorporate NVP-based copolymers into hair fixatives, skin adhesives, and conditioning agents where film-forming performance is critical.

In specialty plastics and optical applications, NVP copolymers provide UV stabilization and surface hydrophilicity in contact lenses and protective coatings. These properties are essential for high-performance materials.
