Overview
Polyethylene glycol monostearate (CAS 9004-99-3 ), also known as polyoxyethylene stearate and approved as E430 , is a nonionic emulsifier and surfactant derived from stearic acid and polyethylene glycol.
It stabilizes oil-in-water emulsions and modifies rheology across food, pharmaceutical, and personal care manufacturing. In food production, it functions as an emulsifier in bakery products, ice cream, and shortenings.
This additive improves texture consistency and extends shelf life in various food applications. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use polyoxyl 40 stearate as a solubilizing carrier for poorly water-soluble active ingredients.
It is utilized in both oral and topical dosage forms to enhance delivery. In cosmetics and personal care, it stabilizes creams and lotions while contributing to a smooth, spreadable texture in formulations.
Textile and paper processing operations use it as a softening and dispersing agent. This improves substrate handling and coating uniformity across industrial manufacturing processes and specialized material treatments.
The material is supplied as a waxy solid in flake or pastille form, with liquid grades available. Standard grades include food-grade ( FCC ), pharmaceutical-grade ( USP /NF), and technical-grade for industrial use.
The number designation reflects the average ethylene oxide units and determines the HLB value. This influences grade selection for specific formulation requirements and desired chemical performance in the final product.
