Overview
Dimethyl malonate (CAS 108-59-8 ), also known as DMM, is the dimethyl ester of malonic acid used as a reactive intermediate and flavoring agent across specialty chemical and food applications.
Its ester functionality makes it a practical building block for synthesizing active ingredients, agrochemicals, and fragrance compounds. In flavor and fragrance manufacturing, DMM contributes fruity, apple-like notes.
It serves as a precursor in synthesizing more complex aroma chemicals. Pharmaceutical and agrochemical producers use it as a key intermediate in the synthesis of barbiturates, vitamin B1, and various crop protection actives.
In cosmetic formulations, it appears in processes requiring controlled ester reactivity, particularly in the synthesis of skin-active compounds and specialty esters. Fine chemical manufacturers also rely on it as a methylating agent.
It is also used as a carbonylating agent in multi-step organic synthesis. Dimethyl malonate is supplied as a clear liquid, typically in drums and IBC containers suited for industrial procurement volumes.
Standard commercial grades are available for technical and fine chemical use, with select suppliers offering material meeting food-grade or FCC specifications for flavor industry applications.
Purity levels in commercial supply commonly reach 99% and above. This high level of purity ensures consistent performance in sensitive chemical reactions and high-quality end products for global distribution.
