Overview
3-Bromo-1-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin ( CAS 126-06-7 ), commonly known as BCDMH, is a halogenated hydantoin compound that functions as a dual-action biocide. It releases both bromine and chlorine upon contact with water.
It is used across water treatment, food processing sanitation, and personal care applications as a controlled-release disinfectant and oxidizer. In recreational and industrial water treatment, tablets or granules are used.
These maintain microbial control in pools, spas, cooling towers, and process water systems where stable halogen release is required. Food processing facilities use it as a sanitizing agent for equipment and surfaces.
It is particularly effective in wash water where bromine-based disinfection offers performance advantages over chlorine alone. In personal care and cosmetics, it functions as a preservative and antimicrobial active.
It is commonly found in rinse-off formulations and industrial cleaning products. Pulp and paper operations also apply it for slime control in process water, where consistent oxidizing activity reduces biofilm formation.
BCDMH is supplied as compressed tablets, granules, and powder to suit different dosing and dissolution requirements. Standard grades include technical and water treatment grades for industrial use.
