2-naphthol

CAS: 135-19-3

Overview

2-Naphthol (CAS 135-19-3 ), also known as Developer BN and Naphthol B, is an aromatic alcohol used as a key chemical intermediate in the synthesis of dyes, pigments, and pharmaceutical compounds.

It functions as a coupling component in azo chemistry and as a preservative and antioxidant in select industrial formulations. In textile and leather processing, it is applied directly to fiber as a diazo coupling base.

This enables the on-fiber formation of fast azo dyes with strong wash resistance. Pigment manufacturers use it to produce azo pigment reds and lakes widely specified in printing inks and packaging coatings.

In pharmaceutical manufacturing, it serves as a starting material for synthesis of antifungal actives and other API intermediates. Personal care formulators have historically used it for its preservative properties.

It also provides antioxidant properties in specific topical applications, though regulatory acceptance varies by market. The material is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline solid or flake.

Technical grade is the standard commercial form, with pharmaceutical-grade material available to meet BP and USP specifications. Packaging typically ranges from 25 kg bags or drums to bulk quantities.
