Calcium nitrite

CAS: 13780-06-8

Overview

Calcium nitrite ( CAS 13780-06-8 ) is an inorganic calcium salt used industrially as a corrosion inhibitor and accelerating admixture in construction and infrastructure applications. It is occasionally referenced under the Caswell No. 147 designation in regulatory contexts.

Its primary commercial value lies in protecting embedded steel reinforcement from chloride-induced corrosion while simultaneously accelerating early concrete strength development. In reinforced concrete structures, it is dosed as an admixture to extend service life.

Bridges, parking decks, marine infrastructure, and below-grade foundations utilize this chemical in chloride-rich environments. Precast concrete producers use it to shorten demolding cycles by accelerating cement hydration at lower temperatures.

In oil and gas well cementing, it functions as a set accelerator under cold downhole conditions. The mining sector uses the compound in grouting operations and in corrosion protection treatments for steel ground support elements.

Calcium nitrite is supplied primarily as an aqueous solution, with 30% and 35% concentrations being the most commercially standard for concrete admixture use. Solid forms, including powder and granules, are available for specific applications.

These solid formats are preferred where liquid handling or freight costs are a constraint. Technical grade is the predominant specification across construction and mining end uses, ensuring reliable performance in heavy industrial settings.
