Calcium molybdate

CAS: 7789-82-4

Overview

Calcium molybdate (CAS 7789-82-4 ) is an inorganic salt supplying both calcium and molybdenum in a stable, low-solubility form. It functions primarily as a corrosion inhibitor and solid lubricant additive across metallurgical and industrial applications.

In anticorrosion coatings and primers, it acts as a pigment-grade inhibitor, replacing chromate-based systems in metal protection for steel and aluminum substrates. Lubricant formulators incorporate it into greases and metalworking fluids.

These applications often involve high-temperature or high-load conditions that demand a molybdenum-based friction modifier. In steel and specialty alloy production, it serves as a molybdenum source during smelting processes.

This material offers a controlled-release alternative to molybdic oxide or ferromolybdenum. Agricultural applications use it as a micronutrient fertilizer additive, correcting molybdenum deficiencies in various soil types.

Legume and brassica crops specifically require it for nitrogen fixation and enzyme activity. Calcium molybdate is supplied as a white to off-white fine powder for industrial use. Technical grade is the standard commercial form.

Purity levels are typically specified at 98% or higher on a MoO₃ or elemental Mo basis. Particle size distribution is a key specification for coating and lubricant grades, and custom milling is commonly available from suppliers.
