Overview

Pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (CAS 3030-47-5 ), commonly abbreviated as PMDETA, is a tertiary triamine used primarily as a ligand and catalyst in controlled radical polymerization and polyurethane systems.

Its ability to coordinate with metal centers makes it a key enabler in atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) processes and amine-catalyzed cure reactions in various industrial sectors.

In polymer manufacturing, PMDETA functions as a ligand for copper catalysts in ATRP, enabling precise molecular weight control in the production of specialty acrylates, methacrylates, and block copolymers.

Polyurethane formulators use it as a tertiary amine catalyst to balance gel and blow reactions in flexible and rigid foam systems, as well as in coatings and adhesives for construction.

In epoxy and sealant formulations, it accelerates cure at ambient or elevated temperatures, supporting faster line speeds in industrial bonding applications and high-performance manufacturing environments.

Water treatment chemical producers also employ it as a building block in the synthesis of chelating agents and corrosion inhibitors, expanding its utility beyond traditional polymer science.

PMDETA is supplied as a liquid at standard commercial purity levels, typically 98% or higher. Technical grade is the predominant specification available in the market, supplied in drums or IBCs.
