Overview
Diethyl sulfate ( CAS 64-67-5 ), also known as DES, is a reactive diethyl ester of sulfuric acid used industrially as an ethylating agent. It transfers ethyl groups to amines, alcohols, and other nucleophiles.
This functionality enables the synthesis of ethylated intermediates across pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and specialty chemical manufacturing. In pharmaceutical synthesis, DES alkylates active pharmaceutical ingredients and intermediates.
It is particularly useful where controlled ethylation is required at scale. Agrochemical producers use it to manufacture ethylated herbicide and pesticide intermediates, especially where other agents present disadvantages.
In personal care chemistry, DES supports the production of ethylated surfactants and conditioning agents used in finished formulations. It also functions as a solvent and carrier in select chemical processes.
The reactivity profile of this compound must be compatible with the target substrate for optimal results. Diethyl sulfate is supplied as a liquid, typically in drum and IBC quantities suited to industrial consumption.
Technical grade is the standard commercial offering, with purity specifications commonly at 99% minimum. Buyers sourcing for pharmaceutical intermediate production should confirm supplier documentation carefully.
Ensure all materials meet applicable regulatory requirements for your specific jurisdiction. This product is a critical component for high-volume chemical synthesis and industrial manufacturing applications worldwide.
