Overview
Methyldiethanolamine ( CAS 105-59-9 ), commonly known as MDEA, is a tertiary amine alcohol used across gas processing, water treatment, and personal care manufacturing. It functions primarily as a selective acid gas absorbent and pH buffer.
In natural gas and refinery operations, MDEA is the preferred solvent for selective H2S removal from gas streams containing CO2. This process offers lower regeneration energy costs than competing amines used in the industry.
Personal care formulators use it as a pH adjuster and neutralizing agent in creams, lotions, and hair care products. In these applications, it also contributes mild conditioning properties to the final consumer formulations.
Water treatment programs rely on MDEA to control pH and inhibit corrosion in industrial cooling and boiler systems. This ensures the longevity and efficiency of critical infrastructure in various manufacturing plants.
In polymer and coatings chemistry, it functions as a curing co-agent and crosslinker intermediate. It is frequently utilized in polyurethane and epoxy formulations to enhance the structural integrity of the finished materials.
MDEA is supplied as a clear to slightly yellow liquid, typically in concentrations of 99% and above. Aqueous solutions at various concentrations are also available to meet specific process requirements for global clients.
The material is typically provided in a standard commercial specification. However, pharmaceutical-grade material is available for regulated applications requiring compliance with specific industry safety and purity protocols.
