Overview

Tetrahydrothiophene (CAS 110-01-0 ), also known as THT and thiophane, is a saturated sulfur-containing heterocyclic compound used commercially as an odorant and corrosion inhibitor across energy and industrial sectors.

Its distinctive, persistent odor makes it the standard gas-odorization agent in natural gas and LPG distribution networks across Europe and many other markets. THT is injected into natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas pipelines.

This injection occurs at low concentrations to provide the characteristic warning odor required by safety regulations, enabling leak detection by end users. In industrial cleaning and maintenance formulations, it functions as a sulfur-based corrosion inhibitor.

It protects metal surfaces exposed to aggressive process environments. Water treatment operations use THT-based chemistry where controlled sulfur dosing is required to manage scaling or microbial activity in distribution systems.

As a flavoring reference compound, it is also evaluated in fragrance and flavor research for its role in characterizing sulfurous aroma profiles. Tetrahydrothiophene is supplied as a clear liquid in drums and IBCs.

Bulk tanker quantities are also available, suited to pipeline odorization programs. Technical-grade material is the standard commercial form, with purity specifications typically at 98% or higher.

Specialty grades meeting tighter purity thresholds are available for analytical and flavor research applications. These high-purity options ensure consistent performance in sensitive laboratory and industrial environments.
