Benzoin

CAS: 119-53-9

Overview

Benzoin (CAS 119-53-9 ), also known by its FEMA 2132 designation in flavor applications, is an aromatic carbonyl compound sourced from natural resin or produced synthetically for industrial use.

It functions primarily as a photoinitiator in UV-curable systems and as a fragrance and flavoring ingredient across multiple industries. In coatings, adhesives, and printing inks, it acts as a photoinitiator.

By absorbing UV radiation, it triggers free-radical polymerization to cure resin systems rapidly without heat. Food and beverage manufacturers use it as a flavoring agent to impart sweet, balsamic, and vanilla-adjacent notes.

These applications are common in confectionery, baked goods, and beverages. Personal care formulators incorporate it into perfumes, soaps, and cosmetic preparations for its warm, resinous fragrance character.

In polymer processing, it also functions as an antioxidant and stabilizer, protecting materials during high-temperature compounding. Benzoin is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder.

It is available in food-grade quality aligned with FEMA specifications and in technical grade for industrial photoinitiator and polymer stabilization applications. Purity levels of 98% and above are standard.
