Barium sulfide (CAS 21109-95-5 ), also known as barium sulphide and BaS, is an inorganic salt used industrially as a reducing and bleaching agent. It functions primarily as a precursor chemical and depilatory agent across several process-intensive industries.

In leather processing, barium sulfide is applied as a hair-removal agent during the beamhouse stage, offering an alternative to sodium sulfide for dehairing hides. This application is critical for preparing raw materials for tanning.
