Glucosamine hydrochloride

CAS: 66-84-2

Overview

Glucosamine hydrochloride (CAS 66-84-2 ), also known as Glucosamine HCl, is an amino monosaccharide salt derived primarily from shellfish chitin or produced via microbial fermentation.

It is used across pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and cosmetic manufacturing as a bioactive ingredient targeting joint health support and skin hydration in various industrial applications.

In dietary supplement manufacturing, it is the preferred form of glucosamine for tablet and capsule formulations due to its higher nitrogen content and lower molecular weight compared to the sulfate salt.

This allows more active substance per dose. Pharmaceutical producers use it as an active ingredient in OTC joint health products and as an intermediate in the synthesis of more complex compounds.

In functional food and beverage applications, it is incorporated into fortified products positioned for mobility and joint wellness. Cosmetic formulators use it in moisturizing creams and serums.

It supports skin barrier function and acts as a humectant in leave-on formulations. Glucosamine hydrochloride is supplied as a white crystalline powder for easy processing and blending.

Standard grades include USP , BP , and food-grade ( FCC ), with pharmaceutical-grade material typically meeting stringent heavy metal and microbial limits relevant to finished dosage form production.

Both shellfish-derived and non-shellfish (fermentation-based) origins are commercially available, an important distinction for allergen-sensitive supply chains and specialized product lines.
