L-arginine

CAS: 74-79-3

Overview

L-Arginine (CAS 74-79-3 ), commonly abbreviated as L-Arg, is a conditionally essential amino acid sourced for use across pharmaceutical, nutritional, and cosmetic manufacturing.

It functions as a pH buffer, stabilizer, and bioavailable nitrogen source in a broad range of formulated products. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, it is used to solubilize poorly water-soluble active ingredients.

It also stabilizes protein-based drug formulations, including injectables and biologics. Sports nutrition and dietary supplement producers incorporate it into pre-workout powders, capsules, and functional beverages.

Food manufacturers apply it as a flavor precursor — FEMA 3819 — in processed and heat-treated products where controlled Maillard reaction development is required for the final product.

In personal care formulations, it acts as a pH adjuster and humectant in skin creams, hair conditioners, and scalp treatments, where its buffering capacity helps maintain formula stability.

L-Arginine is supplied as a white crystalline powder in both free base and hydrochloride salt forms. Standard grades include USP , BP , Ph. Eur. , and food-grade ( FCC ).

The hydrochloride form is commonly preferred for pharmaceutical applications requiring precise pH control. Bulk supply is available in kilogram and metric ton quantities to meet industrial production requirements.
