Overview
Calcium bromide (CAS 7789-41-5 ), also referred to as CaBr2, is an inorganic salt used across oil and gas, pharmaceutical, and industrial sectors. It functions primarily as a high-density brine component.
This chemical acts as a flame retardant precursor and preservation agent in a range of technical and formulated applications. In oil and gas drilling, calcium bromide brine is used as a clear completion fluid.
It is valued for its high density without suspended solids that could damage formations. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as a source of bromide ion in sedative and anticonvulsant formulations.
Controlled ionic concentration is critical to product consistency in these medical applications. In water treatment, it supports biocidal programs, particularly in cooling towers, by generating hypobromous acid.
When activated, it provides effective microbial control for industrial systems. Flame retardant systems in plastics and textiles also draw on this compound as a precursor or synergist to fire suppression chemistry.
Calcium bromide is supplied as an anhydrous powder, dihydrate solid, or as a concentrated aqueous solution. It is typically offered at 52% or 68% w/w for various oilfield and industrial applications.
Pharmaceutical-grade material is available to USP and BP specifications for regulated use. Technical and industrial grades are also offered for water treatment and flame retardant use.
