Overview
Methyl methacrylate ( CAS 80-62-6 ), commonly known as MMA, is a reactive monomer used as the primary building block for polymerization processes across coatings, plastics, and adhesive systems.
It polymerizes readily to form poly(methyl methacrylate) and serves as a co-monomer in a broad range of acrylic polymer formulations. In coatings and surface treatments, MMA is polymerized to produce acrylic resins.
These resins deliver optical clarity, UV resistance, and durability in automotive, architectural, and industrial finishes. Adhesive and sealant formulators use MMA-based systems where fast cure and high bond strength are required.
These systems include structural acrylic adhesives used for bonding metals and plastics. In plastics manufacturing, MMA is the feedstock for cast and extruded PMMA sheet, used in signage, displays, and optical components.
Printing and packaging applications rely on MMA copolymers in UV-curable inks and barrier coatings. These applications are critical where adhesion to film substrates is a primary requirement for the final product.
MMA is supplied as a stabilized liquid monomer, typically inhibited with hydroquinone monomethyl ether (MEHQ) to prevent premature polymerization during storage and transport. This ensures product stability.
Standard commercial grades are available for industrial and technical applications. Inhibitor levels and purity specifications vary by end-use requirement to meet specific manufacturing standards for industrial buyers.
Bulk liquid, IBC, and drum packaging are the standard supply formats for industrial buyers. These logistics options ensure that the monomer is delivered safely and efficiently for large-scale chemical production.
