Methacrylamide

CAS: 79-39-0

Overview

Methacrylamide (CAS 79-39-0 ) is a reactive monomer used to build functional polymer networks across specialty chemical manufacturing. It is commercially recognized under the name methacrylic acid amide in some supplier and regulatory contexts.

Its primary industrial role is as a co-monomer that introduces amide functionality into polymer backbones, enabling controlled surface chemistry and hydrogel formation. In biotechnology and life sciences, it is a key building block for polyacrylamide-based hydrogels.

These hydrogels are used in cell culture scaffolds, drug delivery matrices, and gel electrophoresis systems. Personal care formulators incorporate it into film-forming and conditioning polymers where surface adhesion and moisture retention are critical.

It is also used in surface modification coatings for medical devices and diagnostic substrates, where the amide group enables covalent attachment of biomolecules. Industrial polymer producers use it to introduce reactive sites into copolymer systems.

These systems are essential for adhesives and specialty coatings requiring tunable crosslink density. The chemical is supplied as a white crystalline solid. Standard commercial grades include technical and high-purity research grades.

Purity specifications typically range from 98% to 99%+. Inhibited grades containing a polymerization inhibitor are available for safe handling and storage during transport. This ensures stability throughout the supply chain and manufacturing process.
