di-tert-butyl peroxide

CAS: 110-05-4

Overview

Di-tert-butyl peroxide (CAS 110-05-4 ), commonly known as DTBP, is an organic peroxide used as a high-temperature free-radical initiator and cross-linking agent across rubber and polymer manufacturing.

Its relatively high decomposition temperature makes it the preferred choice where lower-temperature peroxides would activate prematurely during compounding or processing. In rubber and tire production, DTBP initiates cross-linking.

It is used for EPDM, silicone, and natural rubber compounds, delivering vulcanizates with improved heat resistance compared to sulfur-cured alternatives. Polyethylene and polypropylene producers use it to initiate reactions.

These reactions include controlled degradation or grafting, modifying melt flow and mechanical properties for film, pipe, and wire insulation grades. It also functions as a polymerization initiator for styrenic and acrylic monomers.

A high-temperature kick-off point is required to match reactor conditions. In the production of unsaturated polyester resins, DTBP enables elevated-temperature cure cycles that reduce cycle times in compression molding.

Di-tert-butyl peroxide is supplied as a clear liquid, typically at concentrations of 98% or higher for industrial use. It is also available in diluted or blended formulations on inert carriers for transport.

Technical grade is the standard commercial specification, with product conforming to relevant peroxide handling classifications for storage and logistics. This ensures safety and stability during the supply chain process.
