Overview
Hexabromocyclododecane (CAS 25637-99-4 ), commercially known as HBCD, is an additive flame retardant used primarily in thermoplastic and foam-based materials. It functions by interrupting combustion cycles in polymer matrices.
This additive reduces flammability in finished products without requiring chemical bonding to the substrate. In building and construction, HBCD is incorporated into expanded and extruded polystyrene insulation boards.
These boards meet fire performance standards required in wall, roof, and floor assemblies. Textile and upholstery manufacturers apply it to back-coatings on fabrics where flame resistance is a regulatory requirement.
This is essential for commercial interiors and transportation seating. Electronics producers use it in housings and enclosures where UL 94 or equivalent fire ratings must be achieved in plastic components.
These components are typically injection-molded or extruded. Paper and board laminates used in construction packaging also utilize HBCD to comply with specific fire classification requirements for safety.
Hexabromocyclododecane is supplied as a white to off-white powder or granule, with the mixed isomers form being the standard commercial specification for industrial applications and chemical processing.
Technical-grade material is the predominant offering, typically characterized by bromine content and thermal stability parameters relevant to polymer processing and high-temperature manufacturing environments.
It is available in bulk bags and drummed packaging suited to industrial compounding and coating operations. This ensures efficient handling and storage for large-scale manufacturing and distribution needs.
