Dibutyl phthalate

CAS: 84-74-2

Overview

Dibutyl phthalate (CAS 84-74-2 ), commonly abbreviated as DBP, is a phthalate ester plasticizer used across polymer processing, coatings, and specialty chemical formulations.

It functions primarily as a plasticizer and solvent carrier, improving flexibility and workability in a range of industrial systems. In PVC and polymer compounding, DBP imparts flexibility.

It reduces brittleness in films, tubing, and molded components. Printing inks and nitrocellulose lacquers rely on DBP as a solvent carrier and film-forming aid, improving adhesion and coating durability.

Automotive underbody coatings and sealants incorporate DBP to maintain elasticity under mechanical stress and temperature variation. In personal care manufacturing, it has been used as a film plasticizer.

It was used in nail lacquers to prevent cracking, though regulatory restrictions have significantly reduced its use in cosmetic applications across major markets. It is supplied as a clear, oily liquid.

The product is available in drum and IBC quantities, with bulk tanker options available for large-volume industrial procurement. Technical grade is the standard commercial specification.

This grade is used for industrial and polymer applications. Buyers should verify regional regulatory compliance before sourcing, as DBP is subject to restriction under REACH and various cosmetic regulations.
