3-chloro-4-methylaniline

CAS: 95-74-9

Overview

3-Chloro-4-methylaniline (CAS 95-74-9 ), also known as 2-Chloro-4-aminotoluene and abbreviated as 3-CPT, is an aromatic amine intermediate used primarily in the synthesis of agrochemical active ingredients.

It functions as a key building block in the manufacture of herbicides and other crop protection compounds. 3-CPT is most commonly consumed in the production of herbicide active substances.

Its chloro-substituted aniline structure is incorporated into the final molecule during multi-step synthesis. It is used in the manufacture of urea-based and amide-based herbicides targeting broadleaf and grassy weeds.

Formulators and API manufacturers sourcing this intermediate rely on consistent purity to meet the tight specifications required for regulated agrochemical registration dossiers.

It also serves as a precursor in dye and pigment chemistry, though agrochemical synthesis represents the dominant commercial demand. 3-Chloro-4-methylaniline is supplied as a liquid or low-melting solid.

Technical grade is the standard commercial offering, with purity typically specified at 98% or higher by GC. Drum and IBC packaging are conventional for industrial quantities.

Smaller quantities are available for R&D procurement. Handling should be conducted in accordance with safety data sheets due to the characteristic toxicity profile of aromatic amines.
