Triethyl phosphite

CAS: 122-52-1

Overview

Triethyl phosphite (CAS 122-52-1 ), commonly abbreviated as TEP, is a trialkyl phosphite ester used as a reactive intermediate and stabilizer across polymer, lubricant, and agrochemical manufacturing.

Ethyl phosphite is a recognized alternative name in trade and procurement contexts. Its value lies in its ability to act as a ligand, antioxidant precursor, or catalyst component depending on the application.

In polymer production, TEP functions as a stabilizer and processing aid, protecting polyolefins and engineering resins from oxidative degradation during high-temperature compounding processes.

Lubricant and metalworking fluid formulators incorporate it as an antiwear additive precursor, where it reacts in situ to form protective phosphorus-containing films on metal surfaces.

In agrochemical synthesis, TEP serves as a key building block for organophosphate active ingredients, including pesticides and herbicides produced via Michaelis–Arbuzov reactions.

It also acts as a ligand precursor in transition metal catalyst systems used in polymerization and fine chemical processes. This versatility makes it essential for modern chemical synthesis.

Triethyl phosphite is supplied as a clear, colorless liquid in standard drum and IBC packaging. Technical grade is the primary commercial specification, with purity levels typically ranging from 97% to 99%+.

High-purity grades are available for catalyst and synthesis applications where trace impurities affect reaction selectivity. Proper handling is required to maintain the integrity of the chemical during storage.
