Overview
Sodium ethylparaben (CAS 35285-68-8 ), also known as E215 , is the sodium salt form of ethylparaben used as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial preservative. Its water-soluble nature makes it the preferred paraben variant for aqueous-based formulations.
This chemical inhibits the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and molds across food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic systems. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, it preserves oral suspensions, syrups, and topical preparations where consistent microbial control is required.
Food and beverage producers use this additive to extend the stability of sauces, beverages, and confectionery coatings. It is often used in combination with other parabens for broader efficacy and long-term shelf life stability.
Cosmetic and personal care formulators incorporate it into shampoos, lotions, and liquid soap bases. It is ideal where a water-soluble preservative is needed without compromising the clarity of the final formulation.
It also functions as a preservative in industrial and veterinary preparations where aqueous delivery systems are standard. Sodium ethylparaben is supplied as a white crystalline powder or fine granules for easy handling.
Standard grades include food-grade meeting specific requirements, USP , and BP / Ph.Eur. for pharmaceutical applications. These ensure the highest purity levels for sensitive manufacturing processes.
Technical-grade material is also available for industrial uses where compendial certification is not required. This provides a cost-effective solution for non-regulated applications requiring effective microbial protection.
