Overview
Tetrasodium EDTA (CAS 64-02-8 ), also known as Edetate Tetrasodium, is a fully neutralized sodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid used across industrial and consumer formulations as a chelating and sequestering agent.
By binding calcium, magnesium, and heavy metal ions, it prevents mineral interference in formulations, process water, and finished products. In personal care and cosmetics, it stabilizes formulations by deactivating trace metals.
These metals would otherwise degrade active ingredients or cause discoloration. Industrial and household cleaners rely on it to sequester hardness ions, improving surfactant efficiency and preventing scale buildup on surfaces and equipment.
Water treatment operations use it to control metal ion concentrations and inhibit scale formation in process systems. Pharmaceutical manufacturing employs it as a chelating preservative aid, extending product stability.
This is particularly important in topical and injectable formulations where metal contamination must be tightly controlled. The product is supplied as a white crystalline powder and as aqueous solutions, typically at 40% concentration.
Standard grades include technical, food-grade, and USP / BP specifications to meet regulatory requirements across different end markets. Buyers should confirm grade and moisture content when sourcing for applications.
